Making an event more sustainable doesn’t always require an enormous environmental programme. Several relatively small changes can reduce waste and resource consumption while encouraging visitors to make greener choices.
One of the easiest improvements is providing clearly marked recycling and general waste stations throughout the venue. Placement matters too. Recycling bins hidden behind buildings aren’t particularly useful when thousands of visitors are gathering elsewhere.
Event organisers can also reduce single-use plastics by installing drinking-water refill stations and encouraging reusable bottles. Digital tickets, programmes and venue maps can replace thousands of printed documents, while reusable signage can serve multiple events rather than being discarded afterwards.
Other practical improvements include:
- Using energy-efficient lighting where appropriate
- Working with local suppliers to reduce transport distances
- Providing public transport information before the event
- Choosing reusable or compostable food-service materials
- Positioning recycling stations near food and spectator areas
None of these measures will transform an event’s environmental performance individually. Together, however, they can create meaningful reductions in waste and unnecessary resource consumption.
Sustainability often succeeds through dozens of sensible decisions rather than one dramatic solution. Even a small Saturday community event can start making those decisions today.
