Decades have passed since the closure of the Tygerberg Zoo and the Groote Schuur Zoo, leaving a gap in local wildlife education, conservation opportunities, and eco-tourism experiences.
At Sustainable Systems Technologies (SST), one of our long-term dream goals is to be involved in creating a brand-new, world-class zoo for Cape Town, a facility built on the principles of ethical animal care, conservation science, and environmental sustainability.
A hub for conservation and education
A modern zoo could serve as a vital conservation centre, focusing on endangered species through carefully managed breeding and rehabilitation programmes. It would also offer immersive learning opportunities for schools, universities, and the public, helping to deepen understanding of both local and global wildlife conservation challenges.
Such a facility could partner with international conservation organisations, research institutions, and local wildlife reserves to advance scientific knowledge and preserve South Africa’s natural heritage. Interactive exhibits, wildlife talks, and behind-the-scenes tours could engage visitors of all ages while fostering a sense of responsibility for protecting the planet.
Boosting eco-tourism and the local economy
Cape Town already draws millions of visitors annually. Adding a modern, ethically designed zoo to its list of attractions could strengthen its position as a leader in eco-tourism. Beyond attracting tourists, a zoo would create jobs for animal care professionals, educators, researchers, maintenance staff, and hospitality workers.
